MEASURE AND INSTALL 2009 REPLACEMENT ( MEASURE AND INSTALL NEW CONSTRUCTION SEE BELOW)
WOOD SASH AND FRAME: REPLACEMENT WINDOWS
Measure the opening in three places. Height must be measured three places. In
most cases you would use the smallest measurements.
Notice if the center of the sill has a hump in it! If so you must shim ends of
the window to prevent the new window from having a (sad face)!
WHEN ORDERING ( W ) THEN ( H )
I. MEASUREMENTS: Replacement window-Assure that the rough opening is at
least 1/4" on the width, and 1/2" on the height larger than the
overall exact size of the window. New construction window-the rough opening is
at least 1/2" larger than the overall exact size of window on the both of
width and height.
2. PREPARE THE OPENING (for replacement window): Leave the original wood frame.
Clean the opening of any debris. Remove pulleys, jamb liners, weather-stripping,
any old screen hook eyes, other protruding screws or fasteners.
REPLACEMENT WINDOWS
3. INSTALL WINDOW INTO OPENING: For replacement window, place the new window
from the inside of the house into the caulked opening tightly against the stool,
and use shimming devices to block the window into the opening.
B) JOSEPH J. PLOWMAN SR. says, also you can install the window from the outside.
We do 90% of all our installs are done this way. First remove the storm stops. In the newer homes you will need to cut the storm
stops out. Then remove sashes and the sash stops. You must clean the opening of
old caulk and nails. Do not miss any old screws or old paint droppings. If the
window is going to be capped now is the time to cap the sill. Then push the
window in the opening. This will save you from damaging the in side trim. Also
you do not have to re paint the in side. It is easier to paint or cop the out
side.
4. SET THE SHIMS: A) Under the sill at each corner! B) Under each mullion! C)
Under center for horizontal sliders. D) On the locations of each installation
screw at the bottom and the top of the side jamb.
5. ADJUSTMENT: Adjust the shims and side jamb adjusters so that the window is
straight, level and plumb square. Make sure the difference between two diagonal
lines is less then 1/8" or use sashes to visually check the square. NOTE in
older homes you will not be able to level all the time. This is when you will
square using the sashes.
6.SECURING: Use the installation screws to fasten the replacement window (or
fasten new construction window securely using framing nails & nailing fin)
to the wall structure. On new construction windows with " J" Channel
(option) and pneumatic / electric nail gun must be used, so as not to damage
" J" Channel. Install interior stop and casing. Install coil trim as
needed on exposed exterior wood. Apply silicone (approx. 1/4" thickness)
evenly to where window meets the wall & blind stop. Take care to seal all
gaps both inside and outside.
Note before you do the final seal check the window that sashes and frame are square with each other. If not and you need help you should not seal this window.
Before you seal clean the frame and the glass.
Take your time when installing. Start slow if some tell you it is easy. Think
back to when you first started to walk. Everyone said how easy it was. But you
must remember falling down a couple of times. Yes it took time so don’t rush
it!

Care and cleaning
the bottom sash of both single-hung and double hung window tilt in for easy
cleaning. The upper sash of the double - hung window also tilts in. Using a
lintels cloth, sponge or cilamois to clean the glass can clean both glass
panels. The use of rubber squeegee will speed glass drying.
A mild household detergent solution may be used to clean the interior and
exterior surfaces of the main window and sash frames of Crystal windows.
DO NOT USE HARSH ABRASIVE PARTICLE DETERGENTS, PAINT REMOVERS OR SOLVENTS FOR
CLEANING. THE USE OF HARSH POWDERED DETERGENTS CAN CAUSE SCRATCHES & RUIN
THE SURFACE.
TO MAKE SASHES GLIDE UP & DOWN SMOOTHLY, SIMPLY SPRAY SILICONE LUBRICANT
SPARINGLY ON THE BALANCES (THE MECHANICAL PARTS, EITHER COIL OR SPIRAL, THAT
COUNTER BALANCE THE WEIGHT OF THE SASHES) YOU MAY CLEAN THE BALANCES WITH
ALCOHOL OR A SOAP SOLUTION.

PRECAUTIONARY SAFETY RECOMMENDATIONS ON THE CONTAINER LABEL. ALWAYS PROTECT
